On Why We Read Analog:

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

The benefits of turning off, and tuning in.

I remember the first book that made me cry: Where the Red Fern Grows. I think I was in 5th grade. Before that moment, I didn't know books could do that.

“Whatever is noble, true, or beautiful, meditate on that."

And then I read "the Hobbit," and then "The Lord of the Rings trilogy"

And then I read them again, and again, and again.

Seven times I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I loved the people, the characters, the setting, the quest for good over evil. I realized truth and beauty were two of the chief pleasures to be mined out of a good book. Stories were powerful.

Since then I have read thousands of books, became an English teacher and wrote a few myself, and lots of poetry. Nothing feels better than a good book in your hand, other than a good book that you wrote with your heart and soul. Hope you will come visit us one day and find a book that makes you cry because of the beauty in it.
